  • Porcelain tubes, which protected the wires where they passed through wood framing.

Instead of enclosing the conductors inside a cable jacket, each insulated conductor was run separately through the home with air surrounding the wires to help dissipate heat.

Many older homes throughout Central Illinois still contain some original knob-and-tube wiring, even if portions of the electrical system have been updated over the years.

Why Was Knob-and-Tube Wiring Used?

At the time, it was an excellent wiring method.

Homes had very different electrical needs than they do today. Most families had only a handful of lights and a few small appliances.

There were no:

  • Microwave ovens

  • Air fryers

  • Electric vehicle chargers

  • Home offices

  • Multiple televisions

Is Knob-and-Tube Wiring Dangerous?
